My name is Jeremy Whitty and I’m the Director of (the School of) Health Sciences at Hibernia College in Dublin, Ireland. 我叫Jeremy Whitty杰里米•惠蒂,是爱尔兰都柏林Hibernia College赫伯纳学院的健康医学学院主任。

Many people rightly question whether online education is as effective and has the same quality as traditional face to face teaching. If it’s done correctly it’s probably even better. And  I would say education has always depended upon technology. From the first printing press that was invented in China over a thousand years ago, to the European printing press of 1450 and then modern devices such as the  iPad which is a fabulous tool for education.  许多人心存疑问:在线教育是否具有与传统面授教育一样的效果和质量?答案是肯定的。如果正确开展的话,在线教育效果甚至更好。我想说的是:教育始终依赖于技术。从一千多年前中国率先发明活字印刷术,到1450年欧洲印刷机的问世,再到如今iPad等现代化设备, iPad可作为绝妙的教学工具来用。
And indeed, traditional education, as you can see from the picture of the classroom picture, prepares people for a traditional way of working. 事实上,你可以从这张教室的照片看到,传统教育培养的是以传统方式工作的人们。
 But what type of education will give students today the  skills to work in the modern environment? Where we must work in multi disciplinary teams, across borders, managing  many different projects at the same time, in effect where we must think critically.  但是,何类教育能向当今学生传授现代化工作环境中所需技能呢?在该环境中,我们要和不同国家和领域的团队合作,要同时管理许多不同的项目,还需要精密思考。

Hibernia College has invested a lot of time and resources in the research of online learning so that it is effective and engaging and benefits all of the students.  Hibernia College赫伯纳学院投入了大量时间和资源研究在线学习,因此该学习颇有效果,引人入胜、并让所有学生获益。
It’s important to say that online learning is more than just videos and reading, leaving a student lonely as he studies late at night.  So we have researched the learning theories and put them into a framework that describes how people learn through emotion, through cognition and through social and environmental factors and experiences.  我要说的重点是,在线教学不仅仅是提供影像资料和读物,不是放任学生深夜独自学习。我们对教学理论进行了深入研究,构建了学习框架体系,可描述人们如何通过情绪、认知、社会和环境因素以及经验来学习。
One theory on learning is Behaviourism, which is based on a stimulus-response principle. Where repeated interactions result in a conditioned response or a specific answer.   行为主义学习理论,是以刺激反应原理为基础。在反复互动下,引起条件反射或得到明确的答案。
Cognitivism is a learning theory that emphasizes internal mental structures and processes in learning  experience as opposed to the external behaviour shown in behaviourism. 认知主义学习理论强调内在心理结构和教学经验过程,与行为主义的外在行为形成对照。
Constructivism  argues that adults in particular infer knowledge and meaning from the interaction of their experience and ideas.  而建构主义理论认为,成人尤其会凭经验和想法,对知识和含义进行推断。
And then Social, or “Humanistic” learning is a learning theory that views learning as a personal act on the individuals behalf to fulfil their potential as a human being.  另外,社会性或Humanistic人性化学习理论把学习视为人类为了发挥自身潜力而采取的一种个人行为。
In recent years a new theory has been developed based on the previous ones. It is called Andragogy. And it is specifically about adult learning. 近年来,在上述的理论基础上又产生了一种专门针对成人学习的新理论,叫做Andragogy成人教育学理论。
because when adults learn they like to be autonomous, adult learners tend to be self directed in how and what they learn. 成人喜欢自发性的学习,他们往往会自发主导自己的学习方式和内容。
Adult learners come from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences and wish to bring their experience to their new learning.  It may be the wrong experience, but it is still something they will bring to their learning environment.  成人学生拥有丰富的背景和经验,他们希望将自己的经验运用到新的学习中。即便有些经验可能是错误的,他们仍会将其运用到学习环境中。
Adults, unlike children are goal orientated and need to know why they are learning and how it will benefit them.  成人不同于儿童,成人目标明确,需要知道自己为何而学,以及如何从中获益。
And what adults learn must be relevant. They are bringing their experiences, they are bringing their motivations and if what they are learning is not relevant to what they wish to study,  they will quickly lose interest.  成人只学那些与学习目的相关的内容。他们有经验,有学习动机。不过,若所学内容不是他们想要学的,他们会很快失去兴趣。
And it must be practical. It is very important that adults see a benefit in their learning so they can begin to apply in their work, in their hobby, or in whatever the reason is they are learning for.   学习还必须具有实用性。重要的是让成人学员从学习中看到收益,并让他们能够将所学知识运用到工作和爱好中,或把所学知识用于实现其它目的。
And this is what gives them the motivation. 这样,他们才有学习动机。

This example is from one of our screens of one of our lessons.  And as you can see there are different elements in it, if you look at the tabs at the top, the students will look at and overview.  We will give them some tasks. So as you can see, good online education consists of more than just video content. It’s dependent upon tutorials, forums where students can discuss issues and topics and problems. It must include group work  so they are not isolated but can learn from each other and it must have time for self student and reflection. Learning diaries are a very useful tool and assessments must be relevant to their roles (jobs) and the reasons that they are studying the subject. And online learning must be flexible, adult learners will have work, they will have family commitments so there’s needs to be a flexibility around how they study and therefore it requires a lot of support for students.  正如你所看到的,良好的网上教育不仅包括视听内容,而且依赖于辅导教程,以及学生论坛。它必须包含小组作业,这旨在促进相互学习,避免学生们各自单独学习;同时还必须给学生留出自学和独立思考的时间。学习日记是非常有用的工具,作业必须与学生的工作岗位和本课程学习目的相关联。网上教学必须具有灵活性,因为成人学员有在职工作要做,有家庭要照顾,所以他们的学习方式需要灵活。网上教学需要为学生提供许多支持。
The Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Medicine which I’m talking to you about today is a two year programme and consists of taught modules and a research project.  我今天和你介绍的Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Medicine药物医学科学硕士教程是一门学时两年的课程,它包含若干模块的学习和一个研究项目。
The taught modules are divided into three certificates. The first Certificate in Medical Affairs consists of Ethics, Core Competencies in Pharmaceutical Medicine (these are the things you must know if you are working in the pharmaceutical industry), Pharmacovigilance, which looks at the safety and risk management of drugs, and Regulatory Affairs . 通过参加模块的学习可以获得三个证书。第一个是Certificatein Medical Affairs医务证书,它包括制药行业必须了解的Ethics伦理、Core Competencies in Pharmaceutical Medicine药学核心竞争力、还有关注药物安全性和风险管理的Pharmacovigilance药物警戒以及Regulatory Affairs法规事务。
After six months, students do the next certificate. At this stage a student may graduate with a Post Graduate Diploma or if he or she does the research project, six months later they will graduate with the M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Medicine.  学到该阶段,学生可以毕业并拿到研究生文凭。若学员有研究项目,则在6个月后毕业,并获得Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Medicine药物医学科学硕士学位。

In summary, the weekly schedule per module in approximately 2 hours of preparatory work, about three hours looking at “On Demand Content” and attending pre-recorded lectures if we are using them for a module. Again, in summary, the programme constitutes a Post Graduate Diploma in Pharmaceutical Medicine, or the Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Medicine. We take students onto the programme every April and October.  我们于每年4月和10月向学生开课。
There are possible exemptions for graduates of the CCDDRS programme, which is why I’m here talking to you today. You might get exemptions from Ethics, Regulatory Affairs, Pharmaco-vigilance and/or CCPM. And therefore the programme for a CCDDRS graduate is between 18 and 24 months.  CCDDRS课程毕业生有可能获得学分免修待遇,这也是我今天介绍的重点。学院可能允许学员免修Ethics伦理、Regulatory Affairs法规事务、 Pharmacovigilance药物警戒 和/或CCPM。因此,对CCDDRS毕业生而言,我们的课时为18到24个月。

Again to recap on the subjects, the Certificate in Pharmaceutical Research and Development consists of the Discovery and Formulation of Medicines, Drug Development and Therapeutics and Research Methods. The entry criteria is an honours level medical or science degree. That’s at least a four year degree. You will also need some experience as you will be working in groups and you will be taking part in tutorials where you will be expected to bring some of your experience to the conversation so everybody may learn and you will need a high standard of English particularly because the assessments are essay type assessments and therefore it’s important that you can write in good academic English.  录取条件是:报名者需具有四年制或以上医学或科学学位。鉴于学员要参加小组辅导教学,学员要拥有一些经验以便在参加讨论时与大家分享,以便大家互相学习。学员尤其需要具备良好的英语水平,因为作业形式是撰写论文,所以学员要具备良好的学术英语写作能力。
